Neutralizing Squirrel Skin, Friday, February 18th

Today’s post is about the third step of the process between skinning and mounting a squirrel.

Neutralizing is the process to remove the acid left by the pickling solution.  After the fur has pickled, it must be neutralized in a mixture of 1 Tbsp. of baking soda (Borax) per gallon of water.  You should use at least 2 gallons of water to ensure that the fur is entirely covered.  The skin should be neutralized for 15-20 minutes.  If not given enough time, the acid will not all come off.  If given too long, the hair be not be set anymore.  This is the last step before mounting.
