Salting Squirrel Skins, Tuesday, February 15th

Today’s post is the first in a 3-day series on salting, picklilng, and neutralizing a squirrel skin.  These are  3 steps between skinning a squirrel and mounting a squirrel.  This series will then be followed by a post on tanning a fur that you are not mounting.

The first step after you have skinned your squirrel is salting the fur.  The fur will salt for a total of 24 hours (2 times, 12 hours each time).  You will need a tub or bucket that is at least 6-8 inches deep.

The entire fur except the tail must be covered.  After the first 12 hours, take the furs and scrape off the wet salt.  Then cover the entire fur again.
